The basis for marriage in Denmark is the simplified Danish marriage law in combination with European law, which allows all EU citizens and non-EU citizens to marry in all member states of the European Union. In Denmark, no certificate of no impediment to marriage from the country of origin is required. <\/p>\n

However, there have been significant changes since 01.01.2019. The Danish government wants to actively combat “marriages of convenience” with a new law. Documents are no longer checked by the respective registry offices, but by a central authority. The newly created Agency for Family Law (Familieretshuset) checks the documents and issues a Danish certificate of matrimonial capacity. Only with this document can the respective registry office set a date for the marriage. The examination of the documents by the Family Law Agency takes 5 to 8 working days. The Danish examiner can refuse a marriage if there is reasonable suspicion of a “marriage of convenience”, request additional documents and ask the couple to attend an interview. The fee of \u20ac285<\/strong> for checking the documents is payable in advance and will not be refunded in the event of a refusal. So-called “marriages of convenience” are therefore no longer possible. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>
