Get married quickly and easily in Denmark – still!

Anyone who has ever gotten married knows that the best day of your life requires a lot of patience. Waiting for an appointment at the registry office can take time – especially if you still have to obtain documents. It can take even longer if one of the people getting married does not have a German passport. This process has so far been less complicated in Denmark, where appointments at the registry office are generally quicker to obtain. In addition, a certificate of no impediment from the country of origin is not required – often the most difficult hurdle for non-German fiancées. The regulations in Denmark are now somewhat more restrictive. However, with the support of an agency such as“Heiraten-leicht-gemacht” – the Berlin-based company founded by Viktoria Wirt and Karsten Thom in 2003 is one of the pioneers of this service, having successfully arranged around 9,000 weddings in Denmark – these obstacles can still be overcome.

What has changed in Danish marriage law?

Since 2019, the documents required for marriage in Denmark are no longer checked by the registry offices, but by the Central Agency for Family Law. If the agency suspects that the marriage may be a sham, it can request further documents, compare data, ask the couple to come in for an interview or Marriage in Denmark. Checking the documents costs 225 euros – regardless of whether the marriage is ultimately approved. One of several new uncertainties that are often perceived as a burden for couples.

How does getting married in Denmark work with the support of “Marriage made easy”?

Couples who want to get married in Denmark, are legally resident in the EU and are not asylum seekers with toleration status only, should contact the Berlin agency via the website. The necessary documents will then be sent to Heiraten-leicht-gemacht by email: EU ID card or passport, proof of marital status, birth certificates of joint children and the registration forms for the marriage. The agency takes care of the rest of the bureaucracy: it checks the documents for completeness and submits them to the Danish Agency for Family Law. After confirming eligibility for marriage, the agency also arranges the desired date at a registry office in Denmark. This only takes two to three weeks in total.

Good to know: In a telephone conversation, the experts will clarify any personal questions that couples may have in advance. Anyone who does not meet the necessary requirements for marriage in Denmark will be informed of this by the agency right at the beginning. This saves you wasted time and money.

Do you even need the help of an agency to get married in Denmark?

There are now 20 to 30 agencies in Germany and Denmark that specialize in marriages in Denmark. They know the pitfalls involved in providing the documents and also the special conditions of the registry offices, as not all registry offices in Denmark are prepared to marry foreign couples. Karsten Thom from Heiraten-leicht-gemacht states: “We have already had a few couples come to us who initially thought they could organize everything on their own, until they discovered that the processing of the documents took longer due to missing documents or that the desired registry office did not have a free date. In many cases we can help, but sometimes a visa has expired, which means that a marriage in Denmark cannot take place.”

How much does it cost to get married in Denmark with support?

Important to know: The agency Heiraten-leicht-gemacht only charges a fee if it can successfully arrange a wedding date in Denmark. The basic price for couples who want to travel to Denmark on their own is 475 euros. In this case, travel and accommodation costs as well as the fee charged by the Danish Family Law Agency must also be factored in. Couples who would rather concentrate on the actual wedding – and not on the organizational side of things – can also book an all-round service: For 1,190 euros, Heiraten-leicht-gemacht will chauffeur them from their place of residence to the Danish registry office and back – on the road on cloud nine, so to speak.
